SCP-NAP implementation in the Context of SDGs

Implementing SCP-NAP in the context of the new international agenda 2030 of the SDGs

Under the SwitchMed national policy component, UN Environment’s Economy Division has provided advisory services to the SwitchMed countries in developing National Action Plans (NAP) on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP).  Each national process was country driven and responded to the actual needs of each national context.

While the SwitchMed countries were developing their SCP-NAPs, the international community adopted Agenda 2030 and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in September 2015.   SDG 12 is about Sustainable Consumption and Production and under target 12.1 the countries have committed to develop Sustainable Consumption and Production National Action Plans. With the work already carried out by SwitchMed in the region, the project countries have now SCP-NAPs and responded already successfully to one of the SDG indicators.

State of the art of each SCP-NAP implementation in the 8 SwitchMed countries

The objective of this session was:

  • To have each country present the outcomes of their respective national processes and present lessons learned and good practices.
  • To discuss how the implementation will be in line with the SDGs and the possible role of the private sector.

What has been done what is left to be done in each country?

Mr Luc Reuter, SwitchMed National Policy Coordinator at the United Nations Environment Programme – Economy Division and Mrs Elisa Tonda, Head of the Responsible Industry and Value Chain Unit in the Economy Division of UN Environment, moderated this session. They welcomed the participants and gave an overview of how the session will be organized. In the first part of the session, institutional representatives from each of SwitchMed countries presented their SCP-NAP processes. In the second part, moderated by Mrs Elisa Tonda, participants discussed how the implementation will be in line with the SDGs and the possible role of the private sector.
